BOOST BUTTON ISSUES
CAUSE:
The likelihood of an issue with the Boost Button is very low indeed, most reported issues are in fact misunderstandings of how the Boost Button operates. So, the correct function of the current 2-way button and the previous 1-way button are detailed below. Otherwise, Boost Button malfunction has only been known in the case of a bad connection between the button and the bottle, which could result from a loose Bottle Holder for example, a nick in the Boost cable or strain where the cable goes into the Boost Button. Such malfunction would be evident from changes in the button without touching it, although the button could also turn off if the bottle has shut down or has gone into Fault Mode. Correct function of each type of button is shown here:
To turn assistance on and off:
2-way button: Do not press and hold the button – a momentary press of the button will turn on and off. Press the button anywhere to turn on. Press the button in the middle only to turn off.
1-way button: Do not press and hold the Boost Button – this does not turn assistance on and off, only a momentary press of the button will turn on and off.
To Change Power Level:
The 2-way button has five levels – yellow, green, blue, red and white, which can be set up exactly as you want them in the Cytronex App. The Boost Button can only change one colour at a time with one press, it does not cycle through the colours if you hold the button. So if you want to change up or down press on the right or left side of the button momentarily.
The 1-way button has three levels – green, blue and red, which can be set up exactly as you want them in the Cytronex App. The Boost Button can only change one colour at a time with one press, it does not cycle through the colours if you hold the button. So if you want to change to the next power lever – press and hold the button only until you see the colour change then let go, do not continue to hold the button. In this way the button changes one power level at a time in the order green-blue-red-green…… When changing the power level – the colour will change after 1 second of holding the button and you then have another second in which you must let go (or you will turn the lights on).
Holding more than 2 seconds (turning lights on and off):
2-Way button: Press and hold the right side of the button (only) for 2 seconds to turn the lights on or off – let go when you see the yellow and white LEDs illuminate (please note that even if you do not have lights this will still dim the LEDs into night mode). Repeat the same procedure to turn lights off again (LEDs will return to day mode brightness).
1:way button: Button is held down then let go after 2 seconds and before 4 seconds to turn the lights on – let go when you see the button return to the same colour again. Some customers have mistakenly believed that the button colour changing back to the previous was a fault when in fact they have just held down too long and turned the lights on (or off). This will happen even if you do not have lights fitted (the LEDs will however dim to Night Mode). So holding the button for more than 2 seconds and less than 4 seconds before releasing will simply toggle between lights on and off and will not change the power level at all.
Holding more than 4 seconds:
2-way button: Holding the left side of the Boost Button down for more than 4 seconds will cause the blue and white button LEDs to illuminate and the bottle LED to turn blue which is indicating that Cytronex is in Pedal Setup Mode. You will not get power in this mode. From here you can test the setup of your sensor to make sure that you get constant green (shown on both the button and the bottle LED) when pedalling forwards – if you only get flashes of green then setup is not correct. Ideally test on a road and check it stays green on hills. A single momentary press of the Boost Button will cancel Pedal Setup Mode and return to normal function.
1-way button: If you hold the Boost Button down for more than 4 seconds before letting go then you will put Cytronex into Pedal Setup Mode – you will not get power in this mode. Pedal Setup Mode is used to test the sensor is setup correctly – if so the bottle LED turns green whilst pedalling and blue when not pedalling. You can exit from Pedal Setup Mode with a single momentary press of the Boost Button.
Button flashes red 5 times when the button is pressed
If the button flashes red when pressed this means that the battery is empty. If the charge level is showing that there should be charge left then we recommend carrying out a Charge Level Reset as shown under “FIX” at the bottom of this topic. Note that if the charge indication is showing nearly half remaining this could mean that one of the two battery packs inside your bottle has shut down – if so we suggest also doing the charge level reset and sending a log / letting us know when sent, so we can check and advise (also the pack may come back on when fully charged as part of this process).
Button flickering / changing or turning on or off on its own
None of the above are faults (except where one battery remains shut down). However, if your button is flickering and changing modes sporadically, or turning on or off without being touched then this likely indicates a connection problem between the button and the Cytronex Bottle.
FIX:
Any of the problems described in the paragraph above can indicate a connection issue. This can be because the wire has got caught or pulled at some point and either there is a break inside the cable, a break where the wire joins inside the Boost Button or a bad contact in the Bottle Holder plug.
To diagnose this type of fault:
- Check the pins in the Bottle Holder plug – are they all the same length? Gently push a finger on the end of each pin to see whether any of them retract. If they do then this could be the problem – it may be possible to re-seat a retracting contact by pulling outwards until it clicks but unless your Cytronex is new then it is likely the pin locator is broken (this could happen if the plug is forced on when misaligned). If a pin continues to retract contact Cytronex using the message facility below. Please attach a photo showing the retracted pin.
- If none of the pins retract then try wiggling the cable gently at various points starting near the bottle holder plug and working up to the button itself to see if anything makes the button flash. Report to Cytronex where on the cable the problem occurs using the message facility below.
- If the problem is near the bottle end of the cable please also see the instructions relating to a loose Bottle Cage or Holder in Troubleshooter topics 4 or 5 and use the message facility below to send any photos requested there, making sure they are no larger than 250Kb or they will not send.
