BOTTLE NOT CHARGING
CAUSE:
Please note that that if your bottle LED is flashing / pulsing rapidly purple (or red if you have not updated old firmware) and this continues when not on the bike or charger – this is not an empty battery this is Fault Mode and you should see “Rapid purple pulsing from bottle LED / Cytronex disabled” – do not try to charge when in Fault Mode. Charging will not reset Fault Mode – it will continue to flash.
Charging is indicated by the LED on the charger itself – red indicates that the bottle is being charged. Always make sure that the bottle LED (which shines on the Charge Shoe Cytronex logo) illuminates too and if not, move the bottle/Charge Shoe until the LED comes on, otherwise the charge level indication may be incorrect. As longs as the charger is plugged in, the mains ac lead is fully pushed in and the power is switched on at the socket, it is unlikely that the bottle is not in fact charging, unless the battery is full, there is a loose connection in the Charge Shoe or the charger has developed a fault. When the LED on the charger is green then this indicates either a full charge or no bottle connected (which is why a possible loose connection in the Charge Shoe may then need to be investigated).
The illumination you see on the Charge Shoe is the bottle LED which shines on the logo to indicate the current battery charge level. If the illumination on the Charge Shoe is green, then this indicates it is at least three quarters full – when fully charged the LED will go out – unless it is also plugged into USB.
If you see the illumination on the Charge Shoe is a colour other than green even though the charger has changed from red to green this may indicate that your Battery Charge Level needs resetting, and if the light stays on a significant amount of time when the charger is showing green then please check you do not have USB plugged in – this will keep the bottle LED on. Note we advise against charging whilst USB is plugged in.
FIXES:
- If the battery is rapidly pulsing/blinking purple rather than the slow red flashing which indicates an empty battery, then the bottle is in Fault Mode – this is distinct from an empty battery because Fault Mode keeps indicating even when the bottle is not in the Charge Shoe or on the bike. Do not attempt to charge a bottle that is in Fault Mode – always check this section first: Rapid purple pulsing from bottle LED / Cytronex disabled, before re-setting by re-connecting the bottle to the bike. Charging in Fault Mode may cause the charge level indication to become inaccurate requiring a charge level reset.
- Please note it is very unlikely that the charger is not working and more common that the bottle is in fact fully charged but indicating incorrectly – in which case we recommend a charge level reset. If you are sure the bottle is not fully charged because you recently used assistance and have not charged since, yet the charger is indicating green, try removing then replacing the bottle in the Charge Shoe again. If this does not work then it is possible there is a loose nut in the Charge Shoe – but this is very unlikely. To check, do the following: Unplug the charger from the mains, then carefully unscrew the three screws underneath the Charge Shoe. Inside you will see a green PCB and 4 nuts that hold the two main charger ring terminals in place. The bottom two nuts and those above them (under the ring terminals) should all be tight. To tighten – remove the lower nut and the ring terminal first then tighten the nut closest to the PCB (do not over-tighten though). Next place the wire ring terminal back on in exactly the same orientation it came off and fully tighten the lower nut. Do this for both terminals before replacing the plate with the 3 screws.
- Less likely is that the bottle connector itself is damaged – never twist the bottle once it is located in the Charge Shoe or in the bike plug – this could result in damage to the bottle connector requiring a repair. Usually, if this has happened you would also notice other unusual behaviours from your Cytronex. If so, please see: Twisted Connector.
- If all the above have been eliminated, then the charger itself may be at fault and need testing at Cytronex.
