ASSISTANCE FADES OUT SILENTLY AND REPEATEDLY AT A LOW SPEED
CAUSE:
The symptom in this case feels like on / off – as assistance starts to accelerate the bike, it can quickly stop again due to an incorrect low maximum assistance speed. This is easily checked using the App – see the information panel under “Home” in the Bluetooth App or “Customise” in the USB App. If the entry for “Sprocket Teeth” is less than 2 teeth BELOW the actual number of teeth in your sprocket, then this is due to inconsistent pedaling and assistance will turn off at a low speed, depending on how much lower the number of teeth recorded actually is. Please note if you are moving a bottle between different bikes fitted with Cytronex and those bikes have a different number of teeth in the sprocket being sensed, then the sprocket teeth number will only update after assistance has been on for at least 60 seconds constantly.
Provided the wheel size is correctly set (you can check this in the same place within the App but it will not have changed) then this issue is caused by turning the pedals slowly just to get assistance, and not pedalling at the speed of the bike. Cytronex assumes that the rider is helping to drive the bike forward to some/any degree and not pedalling so slowly that the bike is in fact freewheeling and being driven by the motor alone. Just turning the pedals at a lower speed will result in incorrect calculation of the maximum assisted speed, so that assistance keeps turning on (at low speed) then off again shortly afterwards because the bike has accelerated above this low maximum speed.
FIX:
The issue is indicated by the incorrect number of teeth displayed in the App (1-2 out is not a concern because this can be caused by slightly erratic pedalling) and can be quickly resolved by entering and exiting Pedal Setup Mode, which will reset the speed calculation. If assistance then works normally this will resolve the issue, unless the rider slow pedals again. So always pedal at the speed of the bike.
If you have an earlier Cytronex kit where there is a sensor connector, you can complete a sensor reset by undoing the connector with the bottle off, reconnecting the sensor and then your bottle.
To enter Pedal Setup Mode –
- If you have the one-way button (green, blue and red LEDs) engage this by holding down the Boost Button for at least 4 seconds until the Bottle LED turns blue and then release the button.
- If you have the two-way button (amber, blue, green, red and white LEDs) then you can enter Pedal Setup Mode by holding the left side of the Boost Button down for 4 seconds until a blue and white LED shows on the Boost Button (the Bottle LED will also go Blue) and then release the button.
However, if the problem is intermittent (not at one speed) then you can ride in Pedal Setup Mode to find the issue – see intermittent assistance issues.
